Pope Francis appoints Maronite Patriarch Rai a Member of Pontifical Council for Culture

Pope Francis appointed on Tuesday the Patriarch of Antioch and All the East Maronite Cardinal Bechara Boutros Rai as a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture.

Patriarch Cardinal Bechara Boutros Rai (born in 1940) is the 77th Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, a position he has held since 15 March 2011, succeeding Patriarch Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir.

The Pontifical Council for Culture is a department of the administrative apparatus of the Holy See charged with fostering the relationship of the Catholic Church with different cultures.

Pope John Paul II founded it on 20 May 1982. He later merged the Pontifical Council for Dialogue with Non-Believers (founded in 1965) with it.
